Early banknotes in India were first issued during British India period. The Bank of Hindostan General Bank in Bengal and the Bengal Bank issued the first paper currency in the 18th Century. The old currency banknotes in India had the portrait of King George VI. The banknotes of India post-Independence, replaced the George VI series with the Lion capital at Sarnath symbol.
